Internal intercostal muscles, which course down and laterally in front, occupy the chondral and adjacent osseus portion of the rib cage.

External intercostal muscles are seen lateral to internal intercoswtal muscles coursing downward and medially directed in front.

Note the axillary artery (red) and vein (blue), and brachial plexus (white).
